LG Chem has taken steps to secure eco-friendly future technologies in the European market, which is leading the decarbonization industry trend.

LG Chem announced on the 27th that it held an opening ceremony for the Europe Innovation Center in Frankfurt, Germany.

The EU (European Union) is the region where eco-friendly regulations and policies are implemented most proactively and strongly in the global market. From this year, the reduction of plastic packaging waste has been mandated, and from 2030, single-use plastic packaging for fruits and other items will be completely banned. Additionally, with the enforcement of the Battery Act, the scale of waste battery collection is expected to grow about 50 times, from approximately 4GWh in 2025 to 200GWh in 2040.

Accordingly, LG Chem plans to focus on fostering research and development capabilities for eco-friendly technologies in Europe, including next-generation battery materials, bio materials, battery materials, and plastic recycling technologies.

Through the Europe Innovation Center, LG Chem is discussing building cooperative relationships with leading research institutes and universities in Europe such as the Fraunhofer Institute, J?lich Research Center, and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich). It aims to develop the center as an R&D hub that performs various roles from joint research and development to securing top talent. The scale of R&D personnel in the EU region is also planned to expand to around 40 by 2028.

Jong-gu Lee, Vice President and CTO (Chief Technology Officer) of LG Chem, said, "Through the opening of this research center, LG Chem will strengthen its eco-friendly technology R&D capabilities to a global leading level," adding, "We will also focus on discovering technologies that can be rapidly commercialized in high-growth new industry sectors such as eco-friendly plastics and battery recycling."
