Handok and the Korean Pharmaceutical Association announced on the 22nd that the recipients of the 55th 'Handok Academic Award,' jointly conducted by both organizations, are Professor Moon Aeri of Duksung Women's University College of Pharmacy and Professor Jeong Nakshin of Seoul National University College of Pharmacy.
The Handok Academic Award was jointly established by Handok and the Korean Pharmaceutical Association in 1970 to encourage research enthusiasm in the field of pharmacy. It is awarded to researchers who have demonstrated outstanding research achievements for more than 15 years and have devoted themselves to the advancement of Korean pharmacy through active activities.
Professor Moon Aeri is recognized for her dedication to studying the molecular mechanisms of breast cancer metastasis and her contribution to elucidating malignant cancer signaling pathways. She has led research on the development of metastasis control drugs by participating in National Research Laboratories (NRL), the Ministry of Health and Welfare New Drug Development Project, and key research center projects. In particular, she led research to identify targets for triple-negative breast cancer, which lacks targeted therapies, publishing in world-renowned journals such as Cancer Research and Autophagy. She was also the first Korean selected for the UN group of 10 science and technology experts and currently serves as the chairperson of the Korea Foundation for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology, contributing to the development of pharmacy by nurturing future scholars.
Professor Jeong Nakshin has achieved original research results in the field of modified nucleic acids and developed a candidate drug for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), completing Phase 2 clinical trials. Additionally, he has established himself as a world-class medicinal chemistry researcher with over 300 SCI international papers, 24 patents, 6 technology transfers, and numerous awards. He has also served as an editorial board member for various international journals.
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on the 22nd during the 2024 Korean Pharmaceutical Association Fall International Conference, held over three days from the 21st to the 23rd at The-K Hotel Seoul in Seocho-gu, Seoul. The recipients will be presented with the Yakyeon Award and a prize.
