The Ulsan Health and Environment Research Institute supports beekeepers in preparing for the overwintering period of honeybees.
The work to prepare honeybees for overwintering is a crucial process that determines the success or failure of the beekeeping business in the following year.
The overwintering period is the optimal time to carry out control measures against Varroa mites, which cause the most severe damage in beekeeping. For Varroa mite control, physical methods such as synthetic chemical agents, natural ingredient-based medicines, powdered sugar treatment, screened bottom boards, and the use of drone combs are mainly used.
However, although it is recommended to select and use ingredients and products approved as veterinary drugs for beekeeping and to choose and rotate control agents based on their active ingredients, these guidelines are often not followed, resulting in the emergence of resistant mites.
The Health and Environment Research Institute plans to conduct resistance tests for honeybee mite control agents to provide beekeepers with the necessary information to select effective control agents.
An institute official stated, “We plan to actively support beekeepers in smoothly preparing for overwintering,” and added, “If beekeepers face difficulties with mite resistance testing or other management issues and require disease testing, please apply through the Health and Environment Research Institute or the Ulsan branch of the Beekeeping Association.”
