Domestic mobile companies are filing a collective adjustment in the United States regarding Google and Apple's monopoly and excessive in-app payment fees.
According to the Korea Mobile Game Association on the 18th, this collective adjustment is being jointly conducted by the U.S. law firm Hausfeld LLP and the domestic law office With People. Hausfeld LLP previously represented about 48,000 companies in the U.S. last year to secure a settlement for damages related to Google's in-app payments.
Currently, it is known that 30 domestic game companies are participating in the collective adjustment. These companies argue that the 30% fee charged by Google and Apple through their monopoly on in-app payments is excessive, and they demand a reduction and compensation for the companies.
Lawyer Lee Young-gi of With People also participated in the discussion titled "Damage from Google’s In-App Payments and Our Response" held at the National Assembly Members' Office Building on the 24th of last month, stating, "It is estimated that domestic in-app payment damages have exceeded 9 trillion won over the past four years," urging collective action by domestic app developers.
The Korea Mobile Game Association plans to guide domestic companies that have completed the power of attorney on participation procedures until the 31st. Association President Hwang Seong-ik said, "Since the damage caused by Google and Apple's fee policies is very significant, we hope that this opportunity will help alleviate the damages suffered by domestic app developers to some extent."
