Hong Joon-pyo: "Han Dong-hoon is driving the party to ruin... Yoon should understand him from his early political days"

Hong Joon-pyo, the mayor of Daegu, criticized Han Dong-hoon, the party leader, saying his actions are driving the party into chaos. Amid the ongoing revelations by Myung Tae-gyun, Hong came out in defense of President Yoon Suk-yeol and his wife. On the 16th, Mayor Hong stated on his Facebook post, "The party (People Power Party) cannot say a word about Mr. Myung and is being dragged around while playing games over issues that are completely baseless."

He added, "If the party wants to investigate, it should consider Mr. Myung’s request to manipulate public opinion by 2% in favor of candidate Yoon (President Yoon Suk-yeol) as election fraud and request an investigation." He further said, "It is absurd to play the media as if I leaked the party membership list, which is not even true."

Earlier, Mayor Hong posted about Mr. Myung, who has been revealing connections with President Yoon and his wife, declaring, "I will no longer respond to the lies of this election broker." He also defended President Yoon, saying that as a political newcomer at the time, he did not understand the workings of Korean politics and therefore could not discern Mr. Myung.

First, regarding Mr. Myung, Mayor Hong said, "Being mentioned alongside such a person is an insult and embarrassing." He continued, "I knew about him since the primary election, but I did not respond because I believed that party members and the public would not be deceived by an election broker. I will not file any lawsuits or complaints." He added, "Stop dragging me into this," and "Go to jail alone after spouting nonsense all you want."

Regarding the difficult situation involving President Yoon and his wife due to Mr. Myung, he analyzed, "Since candidate Yoon was a political newcomer unfamiliar with the workings of politics, his campaign was infested with all kinds of political brokers and hangers-on, and Mr. Myung was one of them." He added, "I believe that is why candidate Yoon and Mrs. Kim (Geon-hee) could not discern Mr. Myung’s absurd claims," and "I hope the public and party members understand this position of candidate Yoon."

Furthermore, Mayor Hong posted three times on Facebook that day, harshly criticizing Mr. Myung and calling for the reform of polling organizations. He urged, "Polling organizations need to be reformed," and "I hope the Democratic Party will take the lead in reforming the flawed polling organizations in light of the Myung Tae-gyun fraudulent opinion manipulation case."
