Ulsan City is recruiting businesses to participate in the 'Ammonia Bunkering Regulatory Free Zone.'
Businesses participating in this zone will be tasked with developing and demonstrating ammonia bunkering technology for medium and large vessels. The application period is open until October 31.
Ulsan City was previously selected in September for the 'Regulatory Free Zone Candidate' contest organized by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
In the first half of next year, the city will receive close support for the planning costs of new regulatory free zone projects, consulting from technical regulation experts, and coordination with regulatory ministries for the granting of demonstration exemptions.
Eligible applicants for this recruitment are companies or organizations with business sites in Korea that are able to relocate or establish new sites (such as branches, offices, or factories) within the designated zone in the future.
If selected through an evaluation process and designated as a zone business operator, participants who successfully carry out demonstration projects can secure technology for ammonia fuel supply and related equipment, gaining a competitive edge in new technologies.
If the safety and economic feasibility of ammonia fuel are verified, the plan is to commercialize the world's first medium and large ammonia-fueled vessel bunkering industry and secure a leading position in the global market.
For more details, refer to the Ulsan City website and the Ulsan Technopark website.
An Ulsan City official stated, "With rapid progress in the development and commercialization of ammonia-fueled vessels in the shipbuilding industry, we expect to secure global market competitiveness through the designation of the regulatory free zone."
The candidate zone system supports the planning of regulatory free zones that can greatly contribute to the local economy and have a significant impact in resolving regulations.
Out of 21 zone projects submitted by 13 local governments, 7 were selected as candidate zones. Among them, Ulsan City's 'Ammonia Bunkering Regulatory Free Zone' plans to promote technology development and demonstration projects related to bunkering (TTS, STS) for supplying fuel to medium and large ammonia-fueled vessels.
TTS (Truck-to-Ship) bunkering is a method of charging ammonia from land to ship, and the technology to connect and charge multiple tank lorries simultaneously will be demonstrated. STS (Ship-to-Ship) bunkering involves demonstrating the ammonia transfer process between ships at sea, establishing a fuel supply system for medium and large ammonia-fueled vessels.
