Yeonpyeong Naval Battle and Cheonan Shipwreck Relics to Become National Heritage

A plan is being promoted to designate and manage symbols related to veterans as national heritage and preliminary cultural heritage.

On the 26th, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced that it will sign a memorandum of understanding with the National Heritage Administration on the 27th for the "Preservation and Sustainable Use of National Veterans Cultural Heritage."

The two organizations plan to designate and register veterans symbols with high historical value as national heritage. According to the "Act on the Preservation and Use of Modern and Contemporary Cultural Heritage," veterans symbols that have existed for more than 50 years can be registered as national heritage, and even if they are less than 50 years old, they can be selected as preliminary cultural heritage for protection if it is judged that they have a high possibility of being registered as national heritage in the future.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs stated that it plans to discuss selecting the personal belongings and various symbols of the fallen soldiers from the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong, the Cheonan ship sinking, and the Yeonpyeong Island shelling as preliminary cultural heritage.
