The Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency (Chief Choi Jong-moon) announced on the 18th that, as a result of conducting a "Special Crime Prevention Campaign for the Chuseok Holiday" over 10 days from the 10th to the 18th, overall stable public safety was maintained, with a decrease in major crimes and traffic accidents during the holiday period.
According to data from the Jeonbuk police, as of the 17th, no occurrences of the four major crimes?murder and robbery?were reported during the holiday period. However, theft and violence incidents totaled 54 cases, with 33 thefts and 21 violent crimes, and 41 arrests were made. This represents an increase of 2 cases compared to last year, with theft and violence each rising by one case.
During the five days from the 13th to the 17th, 64 traffic accidents occurred, resulting in 4 deaths and 94 people sustaining various injuries. Compared to last year’s Chuseok holiday, the daily average number of accidents decreased by 12.9% (from 14.0 to 12.2), and the number of injured persons also dropped by 20.3% (from 23.6 to 18.8).
This prevention and reduction of accidents were attributed to the Jeonbuk police’s detailed preventive activities, which involved thoroughly inspecting crime-vulnerable factors through special crime prevention efforts.
The police proactively conducted crime prevention diagnostics and visible patrols at establishments handling large amounts of cash, such as jewelry stores, financial institutions, and convenience stores. They carried out 3,147 crime prevention diagnostics and 4,863 online and offline promotions on crime cases and reporting procedures.
Additionally, they focused intensively on responding to violent crimes such as robbery and theft, which directly affect residents’ sense of security and threaten the daily lives of citizens. As a result, stable public safety was maintained, allowing residents to spend the holiday peacefully without any high-profile robbery incidents or other crimes.
The Jeonbuk police devoted all efforts to preventing traffic accidents during the holiday period. They preemptively deployed traffic police to areas expected to be congested. Utilizing undercover patrol cars and police mobile units, they managed traffic in a multi-dimensional manner to ensure smooth vehicle flow and alleviate public inconvenience.
Enforcement was strengthened against violations such as designated lane and shoulder driving on major highways, which are factors causing traffic accidents and congestion. They also concentrated on preventing major traffic accidents caused by drowsy driving and secondary collisions.
Meanwhile, excellent on-site responses by the Jeonbuk police were carried out in various locations. They made their best efforts to assist residents in emergencies, including dementia patients and suicide attempters, ensuring swift safety measures for the community.
On the 9th, the Jeonju Deokjin police received a report of a suicide attempt at Ajung Reservoir. While searching the area, they found a resident struggling in the water, rescued them with the help of 119 emergency services, connected them to the Mental Health Welfare Center, and handed them over to their family.
On the 14th, the Sunchang police quickly responded to a report of an elderly person unable to find their way home. Using a fingerprint scanner held at the police substation, they confirmed personal information and safely reunited the individual with their family.
On the 15th, the Gimje police swiftly intercepted a person moving by vehicle who threatened to commit suicide with a knife. They calmly responded, confiscated the weapon, and rescued the individual. On the same day, the Jangsu police responded to a report of a person lost while performing ancestral grave clearing in the mountains. The initial response team, including fire authorities, found the person about 40 minutes later showing signs of dehydration, provided emergency care, and transported them to a hospital.
On the 16th, the Iksan police assisted a foreigner who had left their wallet on a city bus. The individual did not speak any Korean and could not identify the bus company or bus number. The police contacted all local bus companies, identified the bus operating at the relevant time, and recovered the wallet.
Chief Choi Jong-moon stated, "Thanks to the proactive public safety activities concentrating all police capabilities and the active cooperation of the residents, we were able to maintain peaceful public safety during the Chuseok holiday. We appreciate the support from the residents during the special crime prevention campaign period and will continue to do our best to protect the safety of the citizens."
