Samsung Electronics announced on the 4th that it has proven the accuracy of the Galaxy Watch's fitness measurement data through a collaborative study with the University of Michigan research institute, the Human Performance and Sports Science Center (HPSSC).
The simultaneous measurement of health indicators such as heart rate, sweat loss estimates, maximum oxygen uptake, and body fat percentage using the Galaxy Watch and clinical/research-grade professional equipment confirmed a significant correlation between the two data sets in terms of accuracy.
In an experiment measuring the accuracy of heart rate results during running exercise, the heart rate measured by the Galaxy Watch worn by the subject showed a 90% correlation with the measurements from professional electrocardiogram equipment that records heartbeats.
When comparing sweat loss estimates measured over various distances from 2.5 km to 20 km, the values from the professional equipment and the Galaxy Watch showed a 95% correlation. Sweat loss estimate refers to the amount of fluid lost through sweat during exercise and serves as an indicator of the amount of hydration needed during or after exercise.
The maximum oxygen uptake measured by the Galaxy Watch showed an 82% correlation with the values measured by clinical/research-grade professional equipment. Maximum oxygen uptake is the amount of oxygen absorbed by the body during exercise and is used to set exercise goals appropriate to an individual's fitness level.
The body fat percentage data measured by the Galaxy Watch showed a 95% correlation when compared with the measurements from the DEXA body composition analyzer, a standard device for body composition analysis.
Dr. Adam Replley, Associate Director of Research at the University of Michigan HPSSC, said, "The collaboration between Samsung Electronics and the University of Michigan is an example of combining leading technology and academic expertise," adding, "We hope that through this study, more consumers will be able to utilize Samsung Electronics' cutting-edge technology."
Heonsu Park, Digital Health Team Leader of Samsung Electronics MX Division, said, "We are pleased to once again confirm the outstanding accuracy of the Galaxy Watch through collaboration with the University of Michigan researchers who have excellent expertise in health and sports."
