Former Deputy Chief of Staff to New York Governor Arrested on Charges of Acting as a Secret Agent for the Chinese Government

The former deputy chief of staff to the Governor of New York State in the United States was arrested on charges of acting as an undisclosed agent for the Chinese government.

U.S. prosecutors and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) secured the custody of Linda Sun (40), who was the deputy chief of staff to New York Governor Kathy Hochul (66), in Long Island on the 3rd (local time), according to reports by the U.S. daily The New York Times (NYT) and the Associated Press (AP).

Sun's husband, Chris Hu (41), was also arrested and taken into custody.

The couple is suspected of acting as undisclosed agents for the Chinese government.

According to investigators, while working for the state government, Sun is accused of obstructing attempts by representatives of the Taiwanese government to meet with U.S. officials and of arranging visits to China by senior New York state officials. In return, representatives of the Chinese government facilitated multi-million dollar business transactions for Sun's husband, who was conducting business activities in China.

The indictment also confirmed, according to AP, that a duck dish prepared by a personal chef employed by Chinese government officials was delivered to Sun's parents' home.

Earlier, the FBI conducted a search of the Sun couple's residence in July but did not disclose specific details at that time.
