Han Dong-hoon, leader of the People Power Party, will visit the Gumi National Industrial Complex in Gyeongsangbuk-do on the 3rd to discuss measures to foster the semiconductor industry. This follows a two-day series of field visits, including an inspection of emergency medical services at a university hospital on the 2nd, when the 22nd National Assembly opening ceremony and the September regular session opening ceremony were held. Han’s consecutive visits to the field around the regular session are interpreted as an effort to overcome the limitations of being an external party leader and to take the initiative on policy issues.
On the day, Han plans to visit semiconductor materials and parts companies within the Gumi National Industrial Complex, followed by a semiconductor industry field meeting with semiconductor industry workers at the Gumi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Gumi was designated last year as a national advanced strategic industry specialized complex in the semiconductor sector and is mainly home to companies in semiconductor materials and parts. Afterward, Han is scheduled to meet with Lee Cheol-woo, governor of Gyeongbuk Province, at the Saemaul Undong Theme Park and then visit the birthplace of former President Park Chung-hee.
Earlier, Han made a private visit to the emergency room of Catholic University Yeouido St. Mary’s Hospital in Seoul on the afternoon of the previous day to inspect the status of emergency room operations and emergency medical service conditions. It is known that Han gathered information from medical staff regarding manpower shortages caused by the collective resignation of residents.
Following his first field visit after taking office on the 27th of last month to the Korea Exchange, where he emphasized the abolition of the financial investment income tax (FITS), Han has inspected medical sites related to medical reform and is now handling semiconductor-related schedules. Since announcing his candidacy for the July 23 party leadership election, Han has consistently emphasized the need to abolish FITS for the benefit of 14 million individual investors as a livelihood policy. He has also argued that the increase in medical school quotas for the 2026 academic year should be postponed and that negotiations should begin to facilitate the return of medical professionals to prevent a medical crisis. The abolition of FITS, responses to the medical crisis, and support for semiconductor industry development were also topics raised by Han at the bipartisan leaders’ meeting with Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, on the 2nd.

In particular, this also reflects an intention to show a hands-on approach to livelihood issues in the field, in contrast to Lee Jae-myung, a sitting member of the National Assembly and leader of the Democratic Party, whose activities during the September regular session?such as bill proposals, standing committee work, and national audits?are expected to be highlighted.
Because Han is an external party leader, his participation in National Assembly schedules is limited, but he is relatively free to conduct field activities. A People Power Party official commented, “About a month after Han took office, the party has stabilized, and now he is determined to focus on livelihood issues through active field visits. During the regular session, the ruling party leader meeting people directly and listening to their concerns can serve as a wake-up call to the National Assembly.”
