Semes to Hold Open Innovation Challenge with The Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers

Strengthening Industry-Academia Technology Collaboration

Semiconductor equipment company Semes announced on the 30th that it will hold the 9th Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers-Semes Open Innovation Challenge event on November 7th at Jeju ICC (International Convention Center), featuring an awards ceremony for outstanding papers and presentations of the winning works to promote industry-academia technology exchange.

This event is a paper contest in the field of mechanical engineering that can be applied in industrial sites such as semiconductor and display equipment process technology and ultra-precision sensor measurement technology. It is virtually the only industry-academia open innovation competition held by domestic academic societies.

For this contest, a total of 58 proposals were received from 25 domestic universities and research institutes on topics including ▲ production facility technology ▲ CAE technology ▲ measurement and control technology ▲ thermal, fluid, and material technology ▲ process technology ▲ AI technology. The proposals were comprehensively evaluated based on problem definition, creativity, feasibility, and expected effects, selecting a total of 11 teams including one grand prize winner and two gold prize winners.

The grand prize was awarded to the expert group led by Professor Kim Sanha’s research team from KAIST’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, who developed a nanopororous micropattern polyurethane pad for ultrafine contaminant cleaning. The gold prizes were awarded to Professor Kwak Nogyun from Hanyang University and Researcher Lee Jungwoo from Sogang University in the fluid engineering category, respectively.

Jung Taekyung, CEO of Semes, stated, "As a host leading innovation in future technology society, we will take the lead in developing high-difficulty semiconductor process equipment through innovative idea contests."

Sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, this event has been jointly hosted and operated by the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers and Semes since 2016 with the aim of discovering ideas for future technological innovation.
