The video shows vehicles driving roughly over the section before the accident occurred. Ju stated that he witnessed the unusual road condition while passing nearby, recorded it, and requested an inspection from the district office. The accident happened 13 minutes after his request.
Earlier that day, around 11:20 a.m., a sinkhole appeared on Seongsan-ro near Seongsan Bridge in Yeonhui-dong, Seodaemun-gu, causing a car to fall in. According to the fire department, the sinkhole measured 6 meters wide, 4 meters long, and 2.5 meters deep. The driver, an 82-year-old man identified as Mr. A, was seriously injured and transported to a hospital. The female passenger, Ms. B, aged 79, was also transported to the hospital after receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). She is reported to have regained consciousness.
The video of the accident is also spreading on online communities. Footage recorded by the black box of the car behind the accident vehicle shows a white car suddenly falling into the sinkhole that appeared in an instant while driving.
The police have closed four lanes near the sinkhole to manage the accident and are conducting restoration work.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government is investigating the cause of the accident, considering possible abnormalities in underground facilities or soil erosion caused by heavy rain during the monsoon season.
