Incheon City will hold a residents' briefing session on the 30th at the Park Ballroom Hall of Harbor Park Hotel in Jung-gu to establish a plan for the conservation and utilization of the Incheon tidal flats and to promote the registration of the Incheon tidal flats as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
The Incheon tidal flats are a treasure trove of resources producing various marine products and possess world-class biodiversity. Recently, their value as a blue carbon sink has also been gaining attention.
Accordingly, the city is promoting a project to establish a plan for the conservation and utilization of the Incheon tidal flats, including measures for their use and the promotion of World Natural Heritage registration.
UNESCO World Heritage sites are heritage assets that transcend race, nation, religion, and culture, holding value that all humanity must protect and pass on to future generations, and they possess the highest brand value worldwide.
Korea’s tidal flats, as habitats for biodiversity and endangered species, had their first phase registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site on July 1, 2021. Currently, Muan, Goheung, and Yeosu in Jeollanam-do are listed on the tentative list, and the second phase registration is underway.
Incheon is promoting the registration of Ganghwa-gun, Ongjin-gun, and Yeongjong-do in Jung-gu as key domestic core areas for World Natural Heritage, and for this, the participation willingness of basic local governments and securing residents’ acceptance are necessary.
This residents' briefing session will discuss the conservation and utilization plans for the Incheon tidal flats as well as matters related to the promotion of the Incheon tidal flats’ registration as a World Natural Heritage site. It will serve as an opportunity to explain regulations, support, and related legal amendments arising from the registration promotion, with central government agencies such as the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries providing information on the World Natural Heritage registration and actively collecting diverse opinions from residents.
An official from Incheon City stated, "We will prepare measures to sustainably and wisely utilize the tidal flats, a natural resource unique to Incheon, and ensure this event provides accurate information regarding the promotion of the Incheon tidal flats’ registration as a World Natural Heritage site."
