Amid a series of incidents where university students shared sexually criminal materials in group chat rooms by synthesizing victims' faces onto nude photos, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced that it has requested the police to connect with the victims. In the future, its affiliated organization, the Digital Sexual Crime Victim Support Center, plans to assist with the deletion of such videos.
Kim Garo, spokesperson for the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, stated at the regular briefing at the Government Seoul Office on the 22nd, "In February, the university's human rights center referred a consultation to the Incheon Digital Sexual Crime Victim Support Center, where guidance on victim connection and support methods was provided," adding, "No victim reports have been received yet."
He continued, "Immediately after the report, we requested the investigative agencies to connect with the victims," and explained, "If the false videos are uploaded to the illegal filming tracking system held by the National Police Agency, the Digital Sexual Crime Victim Support Center will be linked to provide support such as deleting the false videos."
According to the police on the 20th, the Cyber Crime Investigation Unit of the Incheon Police Agency is tracking Telegram group chat room operator Mr. A and others on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. Controversy is spreading as incidents have occurred repeatedly where group chat rooms sharing so-called 'deepfake' sexual crime materials, synthesizing victims' faces in university areas, are being operated.
Regarding digital sexual crime victim support work, the government explained that it is striving to implement measures to strengthen the response system. Earlier, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced plans to strengthen the pre-blocking system for preventing digital sexual crimes through the 'Digital Sexual Crime Response System Strengthening Plan' in April.
A Ministry of Gender Equality and Family official said, "In April, a joint inter-ministerial response system strengthening plan was established," and added, "The National Police Agency and related ministries are working actively to implement the measures." The Ministry explained that it is collaborating with the Ministry of Science and ICT to promote legal system improvements and policy research for victim prevention.
