With the official launch of Lee Jae-myung's second term as the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, attention is focused on the party's future direction. Lee Jae-myung succeeded in his re-election with an overwhelming vote share of 85.40%. This is a very rare event in the history of the Democratic Party, as a party leader's re-election has not occurred since former President Kim Dae-jung. Lee became party leader two years ago with a 77.77% vote share, but this time he recorded a much higher percentage. This result symbolically demonstrates how strong Lee Jae-myung's leadership is within the Democratic Party.
This party convention holds significance beyond a simple leadership change. Lee Jae-myung's overwhelming vote share showed that he has secured absolute support within the Democratic Party. After the convention, the party is moving toward strengthening unity and cohesion centered on Lee. Some evaluations suggest that Lee’s presidential campaign team has been established.
Lee’s landslide victory is seen as balancing various factions within the party while solidifying support for him personally. Notably, former lawmaker Jeong Bong-ju’s failure to win a Supreme Council member seat is regarded as a symbolic event demonstrating Lee’s firm leadership position within the party. Jeong Bong-ju was pushed out amid controversy over his 'myeongpari' remarks.
The People Power Party commented on the Democratic Party’s internal situation by saying, "We hope the Democratic Party, together with the people, will be reborn?not just the Democratic Party led by Lee." This reflects concerns about the Democratic Party’s potential changes and indicates that the confrontation with the ruling party may intensify further as the party effectively transitions into a presidential election mode.
Since the launch of Lee Jae-myung’s second term, judicial risks remain a major variable within the Democratic Party. This is because the results of Lee’s trials are expected to be announced sequentially starting in October. Judicial risks are issues that could significantly impact not only Lee personally but also the political future of the entire Democratic Party. Lee faces the difficult task of resolving legal issues while maintaining party unity.
Upon the start of his second term, Lee Jae-myung quickly finalized key party appointments. Lawmaker Jin Seong-jun was retained as the chairman of the Policy Committee, and lawmaker Lee Hae-sik was appointed as the secretary-general, among other key appointments. A notable feature of this round of appointments is the integrated approach aimed at encompassing various factions within the party. This shows that Lee is exercising leadership that values party harmony rather than merely strengthening his own faction.
The appointment of lawmaker Jo Seung-rae as chief spokesperson can also be seen as part of this integrative approach. Jo was previously classified as part of the Ahn Hee-jung faction. This reflects Lee’s willingness to embrace diverse voices within the party.
Additionally, some decisions in this appointment round broke with traditional party practices. For example, appointing Lee Hae-sik, a second-term lawmaker, as secretary-general instead of a first-term lawmaker was an unconventional choice. This demonstrates Lee’s flexible approach to personnel matters and has been positively received within the party.
Lee is expected to emphasize a centrist pragmatic line during his second term. When declaring his candidacy for the party leadership, he used the new term "Meoksanism" to highlight this centrist pragmatic approach. This is interpreted as a strategy to broaden the Democratic Party’s support base and attract moderate voters. Through a practical approach, the party aims to expand its outreach and secure a favorable position in next year’s general election.
The first meeting between Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, and Han Dong-hoon, leader of the People Power Party, is scheduled for August 25. This meeting is the first between the two party leaders and carries significant political meaning. Both are central figures in Korean politics, and there is great interest in what outcomes will emerge from this meeting. As politicians aiming for the presidency, both leaders will likely seek to demonstrate tangible achievements on livelihood issues to the public.
One of the main agenda items likely to be discussed is the financial investment income tax (금투세). Lee emphasized the importance of internal party discussions by retaining Jin Seong-jun as chairman of the Policy Committee. This is interpreted as an intention to prioritize party consensus on sensitive issues like the financial investment income tax. Nevertheless, since both Lee and Han are strongly motivated to show results to the public, there is a possibility that some agreement points will be reached.
Particular attention is being paid to the possibility of cooperation on livelihood issues. Given the recent difficult economic situation, the public expects real changes and achievements from this meeting. How the two leaders will meet these expectations and what policy outcomes will follow the meeting are being closely watched.
