On the 15th, JoongAng Ilbo reported that the day before, the Gangbuk Police Station in Seoul presented a plaque of appreciation to Hong Mo (21), a citizen who witnessed and reported a drug crime that occurred at a pub within their jurisdiction.

The man in his 50s, Mr. A, briefly left the table with two women accompanying him, then returned alone and secretly took out a plastic bag containing white powder from his sleeve and poured it into one woman’s drink. The two women had gone to the restroom, and when they returned to their seats, Mr. A encouraged them to empty their glasses by proposing a toast.
Suspecting drugs due to the suspicious act of secretly putting powder into someone else’s drink, Hong reported it to the police just in case. Officers quickly arrived at the scene, and Mr. A denied the crime, saying, “I didn’t do that.” However, police investigation revealed that the white powder Mr. A put into the drinks of his companions was a narcotic substance.
The two women who were with Mr. A were reportedly strangers who met him for the first time that day. The police determined that Mr. A had prepared the narcotic substance in advance and committed the crime against the victims. The police applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. A on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act and attempted special injury. He was arrested on the 2nd and transferred to the prosecution on the 6th. A police official stated, “These substances have no taste or smell, so they are often secretly mixed into drinks to commit further crimes.”
A similar incident occurred last year. In September last year, the Incheon District Court Criminal Division 7 (Judge Moon Jong-cheol) sentenced Mr. B (62), who was indicted for violating the Narcotics Control Act (psychotropic substances), to 2 years and 6 months in prison. Mr. B was accused of secretly giving a woman he met for the first time at a restaurant in Dong-gu, Incheon, a drink laced with drugs in April last year.
