Officials and professors who were prosecuted for accepting bribes during the bidding process for construction project management services commissioned by Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) were sentenced to prison.
On the 12th, the Criminal Division 27 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Woo In-seong) sentenced Park, a city hall official who was detained and prosecuted on charges of bribery under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, and professors Park and Jung from a private university to prison terms ranging from 2 years and 6 months to 3 years and 6 months. In addition, fines ranging from 40 million to 50 million KRW and confiscations ranging from 20 million to 50 million KRW were also imposed.
They are accused of receiving 50 million KRW in cash from one participating company after being selected as judges in the bidding process for selecting a supervision company commissioned by LH in March 2022, and awarding favorable scores.
The court pointed out, "Bribery is a crime that undermines public trust in the execution of official duties and requires strict punishment." However, it explained the sentencing rationale by stating, "It was considered a mitigating factor that the defendants did not appear to have actively demanded the bribes."
