Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will host the 3rd session of the 2024 Immortal Lectures by inviting Professor Choi Jae-chun, a distinguished professor at Ewha Womans University.

The Immortal Lectures is a representative lifelong education program of the district that invites prominent figures from various fields such as humanities, health, science, and popular culture to discuss contemporary issues and personal life stories. Since its inception in 2019, physicist Kim Sang-wook and art critic Yoo Hong-jun have taken the stage to communicate specialized knowledge in their fields in an easy-to-understand manner to district residents.

The 3rd lecture, scheduled for 4 p.m. on September 13 at the Nowon-gu Citizens’ Hall auditorium, will feature Professor Choi Jae-chun, chairman of the Biodiversity Foundation and distinguished professor at Ewha Womans University, presenting under the title "Ecological Transition ? Climate and Biodiversity Crisis."

Professor Choi Jae-chun is a leading biologist in South Korea, as well as a science writer and YouTube creator who actively communicates with the public. He gained significant attention by introducing the concept of knowledge convergence represented by "consilience." Recently, the area he has been most passionate about, which is also the theme of this lecture, is the "ecological transition." Professor Choi plans to highlight the realities of climate change and biodiversity crises, the most serious environmental issues humanity currently faces, and propose ecological transition as an alternative to secure a sustainable future.

Residents wishing to participate can apply for free online starting from the 19th on the Nowon-gu Office website or register on-site on the day of the lecture. Online registration is limited to 500 people, and on-site registration to 100 people on a first-come, first-served basis. Seating is free seating without assigned seats.

The district will provide sign language interpreters for residents with language or hearing disabilities.

Meanwhile, this year’s Immortal Lectures previously featured docent Jung Woo-cheol with the topic "Vincent van Gogh ? The Painter of the Brightest Passion," and Professor Jung Hee-won of the Geriatrics Department at Seoul Asan Medical Center with the topic "Designing a Life of Aging Slowly."

Oh Seung-rok, mayor of Nowon-gu, stated, “We invited Professor Choi Jae-chun to gain the wisdom most needed by Nowon, which is leading the carbon-neutral era amid the current climate crisis beyond climate change,” and added, “I hope many residents will deeply contemplate ecological transition and have an opportunity to practice it together.”
