Busan Metropolitan City will host the ‘2024 Refugee Capital Busan Cultural Heritage Night Walk’ on August 16 and 17, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, in and around the Busan Modern and Contemporary History Museum.
Since 2016, the city has been organizing this cultural heritage event, which features night-specialized programs such as tours, hands-on experiences, and performances, utilizing Busan’s unique historical and cultural assets as the capital of refuge for 1,023 days during the Korean War.
This year’s event will be held in three zones: ▲ Jung-gu (from the Busan Modern and Contemporary History Museum to the 40 Steps Culture Center to the Busan Meteorological Observatory) ▲ Busanjin-gu (Busan Citizens Park) ▲ Nam-gu (Somak Village residential area in Uam-dong).
This year, under the eight ‘Night’ themes related to ‘Refugee Capital Busan,’ the event will feature 22 diverse cultural programs, offering visitors a special summer night stroll filled with emotion.
Programs include: ▲ Media facade projection ‘Answer Me, Refugee Capital 1023!’ ▲ Nightscape lighting event ‘Memories of Refugee Capital Busan’ ▲ Special nighttime opening event ‘Night of Refuge’ ▲ Public transportation promotion program ‘Refugee Capital Eco-Friendly Visit Challenge’ ▲ Plogging campaign ‘Step-by-Step Moonlight Tour,’ where participants pick up trash at the event site.
Additionally, at the annex of the Busan Modern and Contemporary History Museum, there will be ▲ ‘Refugee Capital Busan Culture & Art Talk Salon’ (docent Kim Chanyong) ▲ ‘Refugee Capital Live DJ Radio Show’ (MC Han Taeyang).
Notably, this year, after the opening performance ‘Night Walk Lighting Ceremony’ at 8:00 PM on the 16th, the event will feature ▲ ‘Nanugi World’ ensemble performance with both disabled and non-disabled artists ▲ free modern and contemporary history experience programs for elementary students from local children’s centers, aiming to enhance cultural heritage accessibility and equity.
The city will also promote regional coexistence programs involving local artists and small business owners to revitalize the original downtown, the core area of ‘Refugee Capital Busan Heritage.’
Programs include: ▲ ‘Refugee Capital Busan Small Theater’ created by local artists and residents ▲ ‘Mildawon Dabang’ in collaboration with local businesses ▲ ‘Alteul Salteul Geumnammae,’ which offers souvenirs for receipts from local businesses ▲ ‘Geumsuni & Geumdongine Minbak,’ providing a welcome kit to those staying at Busan accommodations for at least one night. In partnership with the Dong-gu ESG Center ‘Turtle Factory,’ various eco-friendly craft experiences will also be offered for families.
Shim Jaemin, Director of Culture and Sports at Busan Metropolitan City, stated, “We have prepared a variety of night walk events so that citizens can easily and intimately experience the stories of Refugee Capital Busan,” and added, “We hope many citizens will participate in this event, which will allow us to reflect on the precious meaning of Busan’s modern and contemporary history and culture.”
