US New Unemployment Claims at 233,000... Below Market Expectations

The U.S. Department of Labor announced on the 8th (local time) that the number of new unemployment claims in the United States for the week of July 28 to August 3 was 233,000. This was lower than the market expectation of 241,000.

Continuing unemployment claims, which represent those claiming benefits for two consecutive weeks or more, totaled 1,875,000, exceeding the market expectation of 1,870,000. Continuing claims have been on an upward trend since late April.
