The display industry has unanimously called for the advancement of carbon emission data for materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang) companies in response to carbon regulations from the European Union (EU), the United States, and others. They agreed to share a standardized emission calculation form and actively engage in carbon reduction activities.

The Korea Display Association announced on the 6th that it held the "2024 Display Carbon Neutrality Competitiveness Enhancement Seminar" at Signiel Seoul Studio in Songpa-gu, Seoul. About 50 people, including officials from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) executives from the industry, attended the seminar.
With the EU declaring the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) starting in 2026, carbon regulations are intensifying mainly in major export countries such as the UK and the United States.
The association explained that regardless of the US presidential election in November, there is a high possibility that a US version of CBAM will be implemented. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris is promoting eco-friendly policies. The Republican candidate Donald Trump is also expected to use carbon trade barriers as policies to protect domestic companies and secure tax revenue.
In the private sector, the importance of reducing carbon emissions is increasing as major client Apple announced it will convert its supply chain to 100% renewable energy by 2030.
Domestic display companies are making efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 10% annually on average. However, there is a lack of channels to secure and manage data from second- and third-tier suppliers, and difficulties in ensuring data reliability. SoBuJang companies even find it difficult to calculate their carbon emissions.
At the seminar, the association explained the international standard proposal for calculating carbon emissions of display modules, which is being promoted together with the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Carbon Neutral Research Consortium, and provided guidance on the standardized emission calculation form and how to complete it. They also introduced carbon emission calculation cases from other industries such as batteries and automobiles that are proactively responding to CBAM.
Lee Dong-wook, vice chairman of the association, said, "We plan to assist SoBuJang companies in responding to carbon regulations by preparing a standardized emission calculation form for the supply chain with display companies and promoting third-party verification to ensure reliability," adding, "We will actively participate in the government's supply chain carbon neutrality strategy policy implementation to maximize synergy effects."
