A memorial monument engraved with the names of veterans was erected in Ethiopia, a country that participated in the Korean War.
On the 5th, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced on the 6th that Minister Kang Jeong-ae attended the unveiling ceremony of the Ethiopian Korean War Veterans Memorial Monument held in Addis Ababa on the 5th (local time). The monument, funded by approximately 90 million KRW from the Korean government, contains the names of 2,482 veterans. Made of marble, the monument was placed next to the existing war memorial.
Although Ethiopia is known to have dispatched 3,518 soldiers to the Korean War, records of participation were lost after a communist regime took power in the late 1970s, making it difficult for the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to verify the list of veterans. The monument was designed with extra space to accommodate additional names of veterans identified in the future.
At the event, the ministry presented the August 2017 Korean War Hero of the Month award to the daughter of the late Gurmu Damboba, a Private Second Class in the Ethiopian Army. Additionally, it was announced that starting in the second half of this year, the "Honorary Allowance" paid to Ethiopian veterans will be increased from 50,000 KRW to 100,000 KRW per month.
