British swimming representative Adam Peaty publicly criticized Chinese athletes who competed in the Olympics despite testing positive for banned substances.
On the 5th, British media outlet The Guardian reported that Adam Peaty criticized China's Qin Haiyang and Sun Jiajun for participating in competitions despite positive drug test results. In a post-race interview, Peaty mentioned Qin Haiyang and Sun Jiajun as the reason why "this defeat is painful."
Although the positive results of the two athletes were concluded to be due to food contamination, Peaty stated, "My favorite saying in sports is that winning means nothing if you don't win fairly."
He continued, "If you knowingly take (banned substances), that is not a true victory," adding, "If you have been 'contaminated' twice, you should leave the sports world." He also emphasized, "Basically, there should be trust in the system, but the reality is otherwise," and "There needs to be stricter measures. Cheating is fraud."
However, Peaty said he did not want to criticize the rest of the Chinese athletes. He said, "I don't want to criticize an entire nation or group," calling that "also a very unfair action."
He revealed, "I have refrained from speaking out until now because I did not want to disrupt the team," and concluded the interview by saying, "This defeat will be a strong motivation for our team at the next Olympics."
On the 5th, Peaty teamed up with Matt Richards, Duncan Scott, and Ollie Morgan at the La D?fense swimming pool in Paris for the men's 4x100m medley relay final at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing in 4th place.
China, with Qin Haiyang and Sun Jiajun participating, won the gold medal in this event for the first time in history.
