Gongju City, South Chungcheong Province, announced on the 30th that it will implement a four-day workweek for public officials with children under the age of two starting this August.
The city introduced the four-day workweek to create a child-friendly working environment for public officials and to participate in South Chungcheong Province's "Himssen Chungnam Full Care Childcare Policy."
Eligible public officials will work 40 hours per week and may choose to work from home one day a week or use a compressed schedule, allowing them to commute to the office only four days a week.
For remote work, employees will commute to the office four days a week and work from home one day. For the compressed schedule, they will work 10 hours a day for four days and then take one day off.
They can also use up to two hours per day for childcare and can choose their working days according to their personal circumstances.
The policy applies to employees raising children under the age of two (up to 35 months old). The city stated that 52 employees, excluding those on parental leave, are eligible, accounting for 4.7% of all staff.
A city official said, "By allowing employees with young children to actively use the four-day workweek without worrying about others' opinions, we are creating a work environment where they can take care of their children. This will help achieve a balance between work and family life and address the issue of low birth rates."
