The Dongseongno Renaissance Project is an initiative promoted by the Daegu city government in four sectors?cultural tourism, commercial district, transportation, and urban space?to revive the Dongseongno commercial district, which has recently been facing a downturn. With the designation of Dongseongno as a Special Tourist Zone, the city plans to develop the area into a core region for cultural tourism.

Currently, there are 34 Special Tourist Zones in 13 cities and provinces nationwide, but none had been designated in Daegu until now. The designation of Dongseongno as a Special Tourist Zone is expected to play a significant role in advancing the Dongseongno Renaissance Project.

To revitalize Dongseongno, the Daegu city government plans to focus on expanding tourism infrastructure and hosting festivals, with particular emphasis on promoting and marketing to attract tourists, as well as providing education and consulting support to foster the tourism industry.

With the Special Tourist Zone designation, Dongseongno will benefit from preferential interest rate loans from the Tourism Promotion and Development Fund, national funding for projects to activate the Special Tourist Zone, and relaxed regulations for outdoor advertising permits. Performances will also be allowed in public open spaces, and it will be possible to establish a foreigner-only casino in top-tier hotels.

Based on this support, the Daegu city government, together with Jung-gu Office, which oversees Dongseongno, plans to accelerate tourism revitalization in the Special Tourist Zone by promoting improvements to tourist convenience facilities and developing various tourism courses, implementing 48 detailed projects across 12 units in 6 sectors.

Hong Joonpyo, Mayor of Daegu, said, "Dongseongno is the heart of Daegu and a sacred place for young people," adding, "We will develop a variety of tourism content that combines sightseeing, entertainment, and food, making it a representative attraction in Daegu that many people love to visit."
