"A person collapsed"... A man in his 60s caused a traffic accident and pretended to be a witness

An elderly driver who fled the scene after causing a traffic accident while pretending to be a witness was caught by the police.

On the 15th, the Bundang Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced that they had applied for a pre-arrest warrant for Mr. A (in his 60s), who is suspected of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (hit-and-run vehicle) and causing injury by negligence.

Earlier, Mr. A is accused of hitting a female pedestrian in her 50s, Ms. B, with his passenger car while making a right turn on a road in Bundang-gu, Seongnam City, around 6:50 a.m. on the 12th of last month, and then running over Ms. B’s leg with his vehicle. It is reported that Ms. B sustained injuries requiring 12 weeks of medical treatment, including fractures.

What is absurd is that immediately after the accident, Mr. A pretended to be a witness and helped Ms. B. He claimed to the arriving paramedics and police officers that he had seen a person collapsed and assisted her, insisting that he was a witness, not the perpetrator. Since Ms. B had a speech impairment, she was unable to accurately describe the damage and gave a statement implying that she had fallen on her own.

Mr. A fled the scene as soon as the accident handling was over. However, after Ms. B was transported to the hospital, she told her family during a conversation that she had been hit by a car and injured. Upon receiving a report from Ms. B’s family, the police secured CCTV footage around the accident site and black box recordings from vehicles passing by, confirming that Mr. A had hit Ms. B with his car.

The police considered that Mr. A must have been fully aware of the accident, given that the vehicle jolted as it ran over Ms. B’s leg and that Mr. A got out of the car and approached Ms. B after the accident, and thus booked him on criminal charges. A police official stated, "We plan to conduct supplementary investigations as soon as the decision on the issuance of the pre-arrest warrant for Mr. A is made."
