The suspect's vehicle was parked near the campaign site in Butler, Pennsylvania, where former President Trump was holding the event. Police received multiple reports of suspicious substances around the suspect and immediately launched an investigation.
The suspect, who was fatally shot at the scene, did not carry identification, so authorities began tracking his identity using the registration information of the AR-15 type rifle used in the crime.
Earlier, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified Crooks, a white male in his 20s residing in Pennsylvania, as the suspect in the assassination attempt on former President Trump. The firearm used by the suspect was reportedly legally purchased by his father at least six months prior. Authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing and the exact motive has not been confirmed.
Crooks was registered as a Republican in the Pennsylvania voter registry. However, it was also confirmed that he donated $15 to a progressive voter organization on January 20, 2021, the day President Joe Biden was inaugurated.
Authorities also stated that no signs were found linking Crooks to foreign terrorism.
