The registered population aged 65 and over has surpassed 10 million.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 11th that as of the 10th, the registered population aged 65 and over was 10,000,062, accounting for 19.51% of the total registered population of 51,269,012. Age 65 is the standard for 'elderly' under the Elderly Welfare Act.
Among the registered population aged 65 and over, there are 4,427,682 men and 5,572,380 women, with women outnumbering men by 1,144,698.
By residence, the population aged 65 and over living in the metropolitan area is 4,489,828, while the non-metropolitan population is 5,510,234, with the non-metropolitan area having 102,406 more people than the metropolitan area.
