Gyeonggi Province is officially launching the ‘Climate Action Opportunity Income’ project, which rewards efforts to address the climate crisis with local currency.

Climate Action Opportunity Income is a policy that focuses on the social value of ‘climate action,’ which involves greenhouse gas reduction activities in daily life, and provides evaluation and rewards. Along with opportunity incomes for artists, people with disabilities, athletes, farmers and fishermen, and childcare, it is a flagship policy of Governor Kim Dong-yeon of Gyeonggi Province.

Gyeonggi Province has developed a dedicated app for ‘Climate Action Opportunity Income’ through which residents can record their carbon reduction activities practiced in daily life and receive rewards in local currency and other forms.

The climate action practice areas consist of 15 activities across four fields: transportation, energy, resource circulation, and awareness raising. These include eco-friendly driving, public transportation use, bicycle use, and walking. Gyeonggi Province will provide rewards of up to 60,000 KRW per person annually to 100,000 residents. However, since the program starts in the second half of this year, the maximum reward will be 30,000 KRW this year.

The accumulated rewards will be converted into local currency by mid-next month and can be used like cash. In the future, there are plans to add a function to charge the accumulated rewards onto transportation cards for use.

Eligible participants are Gyeonggi residents aged 7 and older. To participate, download the Climate Action Opportunity Income app from the Google Store or App Store, sign up, and practice climate action.

The Climate Action Opportunity Income app minimizes the hassle of certification through photo capture and upload by automatically linking data for climate action practice verification.

Eco-friendly driving activities are automatically credited based on T map scores, and public transportation use is linked with performance data from metropolitan area transportation card companies, requiring no separate certification. Additionally, walking activities are credited automatically by linking daily step count data from the phone when the app is accessed once per day.

Gyeonggi Province sees the app’s operation method as the biggest differentiator from similar projects in other local governments. Its ease of use is expected to encourage voluntary participation by residents and spread a culture of climate action.

Cha Seong-su, Director of the Climate Environment and Energy Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Through the Climate Action Opportunity Income project, we expect the culture of practicing greenhouse gas reduction in daily life to take root throughout Gyeonggi Province and greatly contribute to achieving carbon neutrality in the province."
