First Korean Victory at Google Solution Challenge... Team from National Pukyong University

For the first time in Korea, a student team from Pukyong National University has won the global competition "Google for Developers Solution Challenge 2024" hosted by Google.

The team, consisting of Lee Hongju, Park Sujeong, Jeon Jueun from the Computer Engineering major and Lee Jieun from the Industrial Design major at Pukyong National University, was selected as one of the TOP 3 final winning teams along with teams from India and Nigeria in this competition, which was held for students of the Google Developer Student Clubs (GDSC) from over 2,000 universities in more than 110 countries worldwide.

The Pukyong National University student team first made it to the TOP 100 among university student teams worldwide in April, then advanced to the TOP 10 in May, and finally reached the TOP 3 in June, winning the competition and receiving a prize of $12,000.

In this competition, where student developers use Google's technology to address one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Pukyong National University team developed the dementia patient daily management app "Gieokchingu Atti" and was recognized for its innovative and groundbreaking technology.

This app provides services to help mild dementia patients recall and record their memories. It features a conversational chatbot function that helps users revisit past memories and manage their daily routines and upcoming schedules independently.

Users can use this app to check their daily routines, such as taking medication or going for a walk, and manage upcoming events like hospital appointments or grandchildren's birthdays in advance. They can also have conversations with the chatbot about past photos and memories to help recall them.

Lee Hongju, a student at Pukyong National University, said, "We developed this app with the goal of strengthening communication skills and providing psychological stability for mild dementia patients. As our society is rapidly aging and the dementia crisis is worsening, I hope this app will help improve the quality of life for mild dementia patients."

The winning teams of this competition receive various benefits, including prize money, technical mentoring from Google engineers, and invitations to attend Google Demo Day.
