Assaulted opponent after heated argument with a hammer

A man in his 20s, presumed to be Korean, assaulted a person he had argued with in an online game using a hammer. The suspect is reported to have traveled approximately 1600 km from New Jersey to Florida to commit the crime.

The Korean-American specialized broadcaster "Radio Korea" reported on the 24th (local time) that the Nassau County Police in Florida held a press conference and announced that Edward Kang, who turns 20 this year, was arrested on charges of second-degree attempted murder.

Kang resides in Newark, New Jersey, about 1600 km away from Florida. Recently, while playing a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, he got into a dispute with another man, and a heated argument ensued between the two.

Unable to control his anger, Kang immediately took a flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Jacksonville International Airport in Florida. He went to carry out what is colloquially called "hyeonpi" (a slang term meaning to assault someone met online in real life).

After a long journey, Kang arrived in Florida, stopped by a nearby tool store to purchase a hammer, flashlight, and other tools for the crime, and stayed at a hotel from the 21st, waiting for an opportunity to commit the offense.

In the early morning of the 23rd, Kang, dressed in black top and bottom clothing and wearing a mask, approached the seaside location of the victim’s house and committed the assault. The victim, Mr. A’s, stepfather heard the victim’s screams and immediately reported to the police.

Police arriving at the scene found the victim and Kang collapsed on the ground, with the victim bleeding. Mr. A was rushed to the hospital and, although injured, is reported to have no serious life-threatening conditions.

Kang is currently held in Nassau County Jail on charges including second-degree attempted murder and armed robbery. The sheriff’s office also stated that during the investigation, Kang showed no signs of remorse and was only concerned about his sentence.
