Tasks to be Pursued Until 2027 World Radiocommunication Conference
Main Agendas Include 6G Standardization and Frequency Discovery

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 24th that South Korea has achieved the highest number of chair positions ever in the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R). ITU is a specialized standardization agency under the United Nations (UN) that oversees international information and communication fields such as electrical, radio, satellite communications, and broadcasting.

At the ITU-R Radiocommunication Study Group 1 (SG1) international meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland, Team Leader Jeong Yong-jun was elected as vice-chair on the 20th. With this, South Korea has secured chair positions in all eight ITU-R study groups, including the chair, for the first time since its participation in ITU activities.

Previously, at the Radiocommunication Assembly and ITU-R study group meetings held in November last year, Korean radiocommunication experts were elected as chair of the Terrestrial Communications Study Group (SG5), vice-chair of the WRC-27 Preparatory Group (CPM-27), vice-chair of the Radiocommunication Advisory Group (RAG), vice-chair of the Radiowave Propagation Study Group (SG3), vice-chair of the Satellite Services Study Group (SG4), vice-chair of the Broadcasting Services Study Group (SG6), and vice-chair of the Science Services Study Group (SG7).

The elected chairs and vice-chairs of each study group plan to lead the core tasks of their respective groups throughout the study period until the World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (WRC-27).

Key discussion topics include the standardization and frequency discovery of the 6G international standard IMT-2030, spectrum availability assessment and prediction research, radiowave propagation studies above 100 GHz bands, satellite IMT-2020 standardization, research on wireless LAN (RLAN) system characteristics, and standardization of new broadcasting service models.

Meanwhile, the National Radio Research Agency has established and operates the Korea ITU Research Committee to support standardization activities so that Korea’s ICT technologies can be adopted as international standards.

Kim Hee-won, Acting Director of the National Radio Research Agency, stated, "It is very encouraging that Korea’s radiocommunication standard experts have achieved the highest number of chair positions ever on the international stage. We will continue to actively strive to enable ITU standard experts, including chairs, to lead activities on the international standardization stage."
