During the summer, subway car temperatures vary depending on the seat location. Seoul Metro has revealed the best way to enjoy the subway most comfortably.
On the 20th, the corporation stated that according to the airflow of cold air inside the train, the coolest spots are at both ends of the car and around seats reserved for the mobility-impaired. Conversely, the warmest area is the center of the car. Passengers can move to a more suitable seat based on the perceived temperature to enjoy a comfortable subway ride.
Measurements of the temperature inside air-conditioned trains showed a difference of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius depending on seat location. The corporation explained that when the train is crowded, the difference can be as much as 6 degrees. Passengers feeling cold can move to the mildly air-conditioned cars, which operate at 1 degree higher than regular cars.
The mildly air-conditioned cars are cars 4 and 7 on Lines 1, 3, and 4; cars 4 and 5 on Lines 5, 6, and 7; and cars 3 and 4 on Line 8. Line 2 does not operate mildly air-conditioned cars separately due to high congestion.
Additionally, congestion information inside trains can be checked on the corporation’s official application (app), 'Ttota Subway.' Crowded trains tend to have higher temperatures due to passengers’ body heat. Checking congestion in advance and boarding less crowded cars is a small tip for enjoying a cooler subway ride.
Meanwhile, due to the early onset of the heatwave compared to previous years, complaints about heating and cooling discomfort have surged. Among the 59,386 complaints received by the corporation from the 1st to the 14th, 51,145 (81.6%) were related to heating and cooling discomfort. Train staff are responding by operating all air conditioning units and fans during rush hours to maintain appropriate temperatures.
Baekho, President of Seoul Metro, said, "We are working hard to create a comfortable subway environment," and urged, "We hope passengers actively utilize these tips when using the subway."
