Vertical watermelon cultivation allows for dense planting in three rows, increasing production by 1.5 times compared to the two-row creeping cultivation method. It also enables management in a standing posture with a straight back, reducing labor intensity and increasing work speed.

Additionally, the vertical cultivation device is a left-right movable type rather than the conventional fixed support device, making soil management and mechanical work easier, and it can be used semi-permanently without the need for dismantling.

Vertical watermelon cultivation, which greatly helps reduce labor and improve productivity, is being promoted as a new technology demonstration project by the Rural Development Administration and has received strong support from participating farms.

Currently, Gurye-gun has distributed three greenhouses (0.2ha) equipped with vertical support facilities through the demonstration project and plans to secure a budget to expand the distribution of vertical watermelon cultivation greenhouses.

County Governor Kim Soon-ho said, “We will actively support the dissemination of various advanced agricultural technologies such as vertical cultivation for watermelon farms struggling with aging and labor shortages, so that farmers can generate stable income.”
