Japan Fukushima Spent Nuclear Fuel Cooling System Restarted After 10-Hour Shutdown

On the 18th, the cooling system for spent nuclear fuel in Reactor No. 6 at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan stopped due to a power outage but resumed operation after about 10 hours.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) announced that at around 8:33 a.m. that day, power supply was cut off at Reactor No. 6 of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, causing the pump used to circulate cooling water for spent nuclear fuel to stop.

At around 8:35 a.m., a fire alarm was triggered. At that time, a worker witnessed smoke rising, and firefighters were dispatched, but no fire was confirmed.

TEPCO stated that the pump sending cooling water resumed operation at around 6:20 p.m., about 10 hours after the equipment stopped.

TEPCO assessed that since the fuel was sufficiently cooled, this incident would not have an immediate impact. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
