Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam announced on the 18th that the largest sports festival for people with disabilities, the 'Changwon Special Mayor's Cup Sports Festival for People with Disabilities,' has opened at the Changwon Gymnasium.
This event, hosted and organized by the Changwon Sports Association for the Disabled, is being held for the third time this year and will take place over four days on the 18th-19th, 21st, and 22nd at seven venues across the city.
This comprehensive sports festival is designed to promote awareness and expand the base of sports for people with disabilities. A total of nine sports (including bowling, schulen, gateball, etc.) and five experience events will see the participation of 1,000 athletes with disabilities, officials, and citizens, fostering spirited competition and camaraderie.
The opening ceremony was attended by Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City and President of the Changwon Sports Association for the Disabled, along with various dignitaries, athletes with disabilities, affiliated organizations, and volunteers, totaling around 600 people. Commendation plaques were awarded to eight individuals for their contributions to the development of sports.
In his welcoming address, Mayor Hong Nam-pyo stated, "We will spare no effort to improve the environment so that people with disabilities can safely and conveniently enjoy sports in their daily lives. We will provide diverse programs to meet demand and expand opportunities so that more people can participate."
Meanwhile, the city plans to continue its efforts to promote sports for people with disabilities in the second half of the year by supporting events such as the 'Inclusive Walking Festival for People with and without Disabilities' and participation in the 'National Sports Festival for the Disabled.'
