A survey result showed that public opinion is sharply divided within the margin of error on whether former Emergency Response Committee Chairman Han Dong-hoon should run for the leadership of the People Power Party.
According to a poll released on the 5th by the polling firm Realmeter (a telephone survey using 97% wireless and 3% wired automated response method conducted on the 3rd with 501 people nationwide aged 18 and over commissioned by Energy Economy Newspaper), support for Han’s candidacy for the next People Power Party leadership election, where he is considered a major contender, was 42.3%, while opposition was 49.1%. Realmeter explained, "The difference between support and opposition was 6.8 percentage points, which is within the margin of error (±4.4 percentage points)." Statistically, it cannot be concluded that either support or opposition is significantly higher.
What draws attention is that respondents who expressed approval of President Yoon Seok-yeol’s administration tend to support Han’s candidacy. Among those with a positive evaluation of President Yoon’s governance, 79.5% supported Han’s run. Among those with a negative evaluation, only 23.8% supported his candidacy.
Regarding ideological tendencies, 57.4% of respondents identifying as conservative expressed support, while 59.4% of those identifying as progressive opposed it.
Among respondents who supported Han’s bid for party leadership, the reasons cited were: 30.6% expected "new and youthful leadership," 27.1% anticipated him as a "future presidential candidate," 18.2% cited "competence in the role of emergency committee chairman regardless of election outcomes," and 7.1% mentioned "sufficient fulfillment of responsibilities in the general election," in that order.
Those opposed cited "low expectations for his performance as party leader" as the primary reason at 46.0%. This was followed by "negative views due to general election defeat" at 26.8%, "concerns about party-government conflicts due to leadership challenge" at 10.0%, and "lack of a clear support base within the party" at 7.6%.
