On the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Honshu, Japan, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 occurred at around 6:31 AM on the 3rd.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, seismic intensity 5 strong shaking was detected in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Seismic intensity 5 strong means most people feel disturbed in their actions, and unsecured furniture may topple. The focal depth was estimated to be about 10 km, and the magnitude was 5.9.
Subsequently, at around 6:40 AM on the same day, another earthquake with a seismic intensity of 4.8 was confirmed, with its epicenter off the coast of the Noto Peninsula.
The Meteorological Agency stated that there is no concern for tsunami damage caused by these earthquakes. The Nuclear Regulation Authority also announced that there have been no abnormalities so far at nuclear power plants located in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, where shaking of seismic intensity 4 was confirmed from the first earthquake.
