Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) has launched the full-scale implementation of the ‘Seoul Hyochang Park (National Heritage Site No. 330) Lively Exploration’ program starting this month.

This is part of the National Heritage Administration’s public project, the ‘2024 Our Local National Heritage Utilization Project.’ It was planned to inform more residents about the historical and cultural significance of Hyochang Park, a representative nationally designated cultural heritage site in the region.

Hyochang Park is famous as a sacred site of the independence movement. After independence, Baekbeom Kim Gu personally established the burial grounds for the Three Martyrs (Lee Bong-chang, Yun Bong-gil, Baek Jeong-gi) and key figures of the Provisional Government (Lee Dong-nyeong, Jo Seong-hwan, Cha Ri-seok), and also built a memorial tomb for An Jung-geun. Kim Gu himself was also enshrined in Hyochang Park.

The ‘Seoul Hyochang Park Lively Exploration’ consists of four programs: ▲Challenge! 21st Century Korean Patriotic Corps ▲Seoul Hyochang Park Story Bus ▲Challenge! Children’s Painter ▲Seoul Hyochang Park Story Yard.

The flagship program, ‘Challenge! 21st Century Korean Patriotic Corps,’ was first introduced on the 25th and is currently accepting participants for the session on the 15th of next month. It recruits about 30 upper-grade elementary school students and older youth. In this program, participants listen to explanations at Hyochang Park and the Baekbeom Kim Gu Memorial Hall, then dress in modern-era clothing and decode ciphers themselves. After decoding the cipher, they experience delivering independence funds. The program will also be held on September 28 and October 12.

The participation fee is 1,000 KRW per person, and applications or inquiries for the program can be made via phone to the operating office (Wooriga Mandeuneun Mirae) or through the Nolto website.

The ‘Seoul Hyochang Park Story Bus’ is accepting applications for desired dates until October from groups of about 40 foreigners and multicultural families. Participants ride a bus to tour Hyochang Park and the War Memorial of Korea, learning about the history of the independence movement and Korea’s history after liberation. Participation is free of charge.

In September, there are plans to conduct experiential activities at Hyochang Park where participants can draw patriotic martyrs and the Mugunghwa Taegeukgi (Rose of Sharon and Taegeukgi flag). An interactive play themed on Lee Bong-chang is also scheduled. After watching a play depicting Lee Bong-chang’s life, participants can act out a scene from the play themselves.

Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “We express deep respect and admiration for the courage of the patriots who sacrificed for the country’s independence,” and added, “We ask for continuous interest and participation in this program, which allows us to remember the patriots and appreciate the preciousness of liberation.”
