Dong-Eui University East Asia Research Institute and Korean Association of Modern Japanese Studies Hold International Academic Conference

"Rapidly Changing International Situation and Future Prospects for East Asia"

Dong-eui University (President Han Suhwan), the East Asia Research Institute (Director Lee Kyungkyu), and the Korean Modern Japanese Studies Association (President Shin Kyungho) jointly held an international academic conference on June 18 at the university’s Second Humanities Building under the theme “Rapidly Changing International Situation and Future Prospects of East Asia,” according to an announcement on the 22nd.

This event featured keynote lectures and seven session tracks, including Multicultural Coexistence and History & Culture, with participation from experts from Korea and Japan. A total of 67 papers were presented, and there were heated discussions on various current issues, including the challenges of multicultural coexistence in East Asia.

Shin Kyungho, President of the Korean Modern Japanese Studies Association, stated in his opening remarks, “There is growing concern about ethnic discrimination and disregard for human rights against minorities such as foreigners and socially disadvantaged groups. Our members, who are active experts from both Korea and Japan, must take a proactive role in addressing these issues.”

Following this, Tetsuya Hakoda, editorial writer for the Asahi Shimbun, delivered a keynote lecture on “The Path Forward for Korea and Japan Amidst Turbulent International Circumstances.” Hakoda assessed that Korea-Japan relations over the past decade have been heavy and cold, and pointed out that, going forward, it is most important for both countries to build a friendly and cooperative relationship based on diplomatic reconciliation and mutual trust.

Lee Kyungkyu, Director of the East Asia Research Institute at Dong-eui University, commented, “This was a forum for passionate academic debate among experts on ways to achieve joint prosperity and mutual trust in East Asia. In the midst of rapidly changing international circumstances, not only the political circles but also the academic and civil sectors of both countries must actively engage to advance Korea-Japan relations.”

The East Asia Research Institute at Dong-eui University is currently conducting a project supported by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea under the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institute Support Program, focusing on “Collection, Analysis, and Database Construction of Diplomatic Documents Related to Zainichi Koreans since Liberation.”

In addition, the Korean Modern Japanese Studies Association is a professional academic organization with over 500 Korean and Japanese researchers in the fields of multicultural coexistence, history, and other humanities and social sciences. The association holds at least two academic conferences annually, alternating between Korea and Japan, and actively promotes academic and cultural exchanges on a variety of East Asian issues.
