At least 50 people have died in floods caused by heavy rains in Afghanistan. This comes just a week after a large-scale flood resulted in more than 300 casualties.
According to AFP and other sources on the 18th (local time), 50 people died due to heavy rains that began the previous day in Ghor Province in western Afghanistan. The number of deaths is expected to rise as many people remain missing.
Two thousand houses were completely destroyed, and 4,000 houses were partially damaged. In addition, more than 2,000 shops were submerged in water.
Abdul Raman Badri, spokesperson for the Ghor Province police, explained, "Thousands of livestock died due to the terrible floods, and farmland was submerged. Roads and bridges were flooded, causing isolation."
Earlier, on the 10th, heavy rains in Baghlan Province in northern Afghanistan caused large-scale flooding, resulting in 315 deaths and over 1,600 injuries. The Afghan Ministry of Defense declared a state of emergency in the affected areas on the 12th, and UN international organizations are conducting relief activities.
Typically, Afghanistan's rainy season begins in June, but this year, unusually heavy rains have fallen since last month, increasing the damage.
According to the United Nations, Afghanistan is a vulnerable country lacking adequate infrastructure to respond to climate change.
