The current status of major tasks by each department and bureau was also shared.
The mayor highlighted that, just as South Korea achieved a quantum leap in national competitiveness and prestige through hosting the Seoul Olympics, the construction of the Pohang International Exhibition and Convention Center is a high value-added industry that can lead economic revitalization and enhance urban competitiveness through fostering the MICE industry, significantly contributing to the development of regional specialized industries and tourism.
In particular, he urged all efforts to attract international-scale conferences and events that can lead global agendas like the Swiss Davos Forum and become a representative brand of the city in line with the center’s opening.
Following this, leveraging the selection as the nation’s first Food Tech Research Support Center, Pohang is expected to proactively nurture the future food tech industry by creating a food tech innovation cluster and related ecosystem, thereby contributing to national balanced development as well.
He also called for securing a sustainable job creation model in new industries through coexistence with existing public transportation companies, while improving citizen convenience by activating the demand-responsive transport system ‘TaboSo DRT’ that can flexibly respond to diverse demands.
Alongside this, he stressed thorough efforts to secure national funding projects to gain a super-gap competitive edge in core new industries such as secondary batteries, the construction of the Yeongilman Bridge, and the establishment of POSTECH Medical School. He also requested meticulous safety inspections for large-scale events scheduled in May and proactive preparation for summer wind and flood disasters.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok emphasized, “Let us continuously strive to advance current projects to overcome the crisis of local extinction and lead balanced regional development with a proactive spirit of challenge, innovation, convergence, and collaboration, realizing Pohang’s grand dream where future generations can live prosperous lives.”
