Focus on warmth considering temperature differences, beware of bees and other pests
Adequate stretching, check green speed
Avoid hazardous areas, effective running approach

Spring has arrived. It is the peak golf season. It is a perfect season for rounds. It is neither too hot nor too cold. However, the field conditions for spring golf are not perfect. Thorough preparation is necessary to enjoy a pleasant round. This is something to always keep in mind when playing rounds in April and May.

When playing a round in spring, when course conditions are not perfect, thorough preparation is necessary.

When you step onto the course, you naturally become immersed in the charm of nature. However, actual rounds are not easy. You pack tees, golf balls, sunblock, rain gear, a rangefinder, snacks, and more. Most golf courses in Korea are located in mountainous terrain. Compared to urban areas, the temperature is 2 to 3 degrees lower. The daily temperature difference is still large. When the wind blows, the perceived temperature drops sharply. Players who play morning golf focus on keeping warm.

Spring sunlight is harsh. It is an ‘enemy’ to the skin. Sunscreen is kept in the caddie bag. Golf courses have high grass reflectivity and, along with ski resorts, are among the places with the strongest sunlight. The sun protection factor (SPF) should be over 50. It is reapplied frequently during play. If you dislike sticky sunscreen, powder or spray types are available. Sunglasses are also essential. They block harmful UVA and UVB ultraviolet rays, preventing eye fatigue. When reading the line on the green, it helps to take off the sunglasses. An umbrella is also necessary. It is perfect for blocking the heat.

Be careful when selecting golf attire. Thin clothes are better than thick ones. Layering several pieces is recommended. This is to avoid interference with your swing. You can remove layers if you get hot. Bring a windbreaker, vest, and arm sleeves as well. Arrive at the clubhouse at least one hour early. Take time to relax. Do sufficient stretching. Without enough warm-up, your lower back, elbows, and ankles may be strained. Checking the practice green is essential. Spring is the season for course aeration work. Always check the speed on the practice green.

At least for the first few holes, play while walking. It is the best way to warm up your body. The course conditions are not yet perfect. There are uneven slopes, lakes, deep roughs, and bunkers lurking everywhere. On the fairway, carefully check the lie of the ball. Divots or bare ground can cause fatal mishits such as topping or hitting behind the ball.

Above all, accurate contact is important. Make your swing smaller than usual. Focus on the impact. Hold the grip lower and use a ‘three-quarter’ swing. Always avoid penalty areas. Many places show the ground because the grass has not grown enough. For the short game, a ‘running approach’ by rolling the ball with a pitching wedge is effective. Even near the green, you don’t always have to use a wedge. Attacking with a putter can reduce mishits. Your score will naturally improve as well.

It is the season when bees and insects appear. Keep insect bite prevention and treatment products, which are easily available at pharmacies, in your bag. Ask the caddie about dangerous areas. This is to avoid places where pests appear. Be cautious when walking through long rough or forests. Post-round care is also important. Properly care for skin that has suffered mild sunburn. First, cool down the heat. Massage with cucumber or similar items. Using a mask pack with various functional benefits is also a good option.
