Hyundai Engineering & Construction has introduced a smart safety system at an underground tunnel construction site, enabling workers to operate in a safer environment. On the 25th, Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced that it will apply the 'Smart Safety System (HITTS)', which combines underground tunnel wireless communication technology and safety solutions, to major domestic and international sites for the first time in Korea.

The Smart Safety System utilizes idle frequency bands available for public use within the TV broadcast frequency range, enabling Wi-Fi wireless communication throughout the entire tunnel and underground sections. As it is easy to install and operate while moving according to tunnel excavation, it can establish an environment with ▲high-resolution, high-magnification CCTV ▲IoT hazardous gas sensors ▲emergency warning lights and two-way speakers ▲IoT weather sensors ▲worker equipment location tracking.

Additionally, real-time monitoring and remote management are possible from the site office or headquarters, which is expected to contribute to preventing safety accidents and improving construction productivity in tunnels and underground spaces, previously considered communication blind spots.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction first piloted this technology in 2021 on Section 3 of the Byeollae Line double-track subway, followed by its application on Section 1 of the Incheon Metro Line 1 Geomdan Extension, proving its performance. Last year, it was demonstrated at the ‘Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport - NEOM Roadshow’ held in Seoul, receiving high praise from clients including Nadmi Al Nasr, CEO of NEOM.

Through pilot applications at domestic tunnel sites, Hyundai Engineering & Construction enhanced safety and lightened the hardware to complete the development of the Smart Safety System. It is being applied to major domestic and international sites, including the NEOM Learning Tunnel project in Saudi Arabia. In the future, the system will be expanded to projects such as the Seoul Metropolitan Area GTX-C Line and the underground construction of National Road 47 in Wangsu, Namyangju, to strengthen the safety and efficiency of underground tunnel construction.

A Hyundai Engineering & Construction official stated, “We expect to overcome spatial limitations with Hyundai Engineering & Construction’s tunnel-specialized technology, further enhancing business competitiveness,” adding, “By utilizing the big data accumulated from safety management at the site, we will be able to firmly establish a safety management system for workers in confined spaces.”
