At the first rice planting event, about 100 people including Jeong Gyeong-won, director of the Agricultural Technology Center, members of the Korea Rice Farmers Association Pohang City Federation, and agricultural-related officials participated, demonstrating rice planting and praying for a bountiful harvest free from natural disasters and pests.

Additionally, Pohang City held a session to communicate with attendees, listening to development plans and difficulties for a bountiful harvest and high-quality rice production.

The ‘Haedam-byeo’ variety planted that day is a top-quality rice selected by the Rural Development Administration, known for its excellent taste as an early maturing variety, and is expected to be harvested at the end of August to be served as new rice on Chuseok ancestral rites tables.

Starting with this first rice planting, the city expects rice planting to continue until early June, with an estimated production of about 38,000 tons of rice from a cultivation area of 5,573 hectares this year.

Jeong Gyeong-won, director of the Agricultural Technology Center, said, “To overcome the crisis in agricultural production caused by decreased rice consumption and continued rice price declines, we will do our best to make this a happy year for Pohang farmers by introducing innovative technologies and promoting competitive support programs.”

Pohang City is focusing its administrative efforts on fostering future growth in the agricultural industry and realizing smart agriculture to respond to climate change and create sustainable growth engines.
