hy announced on the 19th that it has proven the hangover relief functionality of its patented material, ‘Ice Plant Complex Concentrate.’ hy plans to sell this material externally through business-to-business (B2B) transactions and target the hangover remedy raw material market.
Ice Plant Concentrate is a complex of ‘Ice Plant’ and two natural extracts (Galhwa extract and Ssuk extract). The main ingredient, Ice Plant, is a type of succulent plant named for the transparent crystals on its stems and leaf surfaces that resemble ice.
hy demonstrated the hangover relief functionality of this material through a human application test conducted on adult men and women. When Ice Plant Concentrate was consumed after drinking alcohol, the hangover relief effect appeared within 15 minutes. After 30 minutes, the blood alcohol concentration of the test subjects decreased by 15.1% compared to non-consumers. The blood acetaldehyde concentration of consumers also decreased by 21.4%. Acetaldehyde, produced during alcohol metabolism, is considered the main cause of hangovers. One hour after drinking, the activity of alcohol-metabolizing enzymes increased by 76.8% compared to the control group.
In June of last year, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety established the ‘Guidelines for Human Application Tests to Verify Hangover Relief Claims and Advertising.’ The guidelines explain that from January 1 of next year, hangover remedy products can only display or advertise hangover relief functionality if they have objective and scientific data obtained through human application tests or qualitative literature reviews of human application test results.
Currently, Ice Plant Concentrate is the only material that meets the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety’s guidelines. Registration on ‘CRIS,’ the domestic clinical trial management site established by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, has also been completed. It can be manufactured in various forms such as liquid, pill, jelly, and film, making it highly versatile.
hy is preparing raw material contracts mainly with large pharmaceutical companies. Yang Junho, head of hy’s Research Planning Team, said, “Ice Plant Complex Concentrate is a material that has exemplarily complied with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety’s new guidelines and proven its hangover relief efficacy. We will continue research on the approximately 250 natural product libraries secured by hy.”
