Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Attends International Renewable Energy Agency Assembly... Discusses Renewable Energy Policy Coordination with US, Japan, and Others

Attendance at High-Level Plenary Session and Meeting with Secretary-General

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 16th (local time) that it attended the 14th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). At this assembly, Jeong Gyeong-rok, Director of Renewable Energy Policy at the Ministry, attended as the chief representative of the Korean government.

IRENA is an international organization established in 2011 to expand renewable energy and promote international cooperation. Korea is currently serving as a key member country on the Board of Directors, the core decision-making body. Korea participated in high-level plenary sessions and mentioned its achievement of more than doubling the share of power generation from renewable energy over the past five years despite challenging conditions for renewable energy deployment. Korea committed to sharing various policy experiences accumulated during the domestic deployment process with member countries to contribute to the global expansion of renewable energy.

Director Jeong met with Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA, on the same day and agreed to strengthen cooperative relations. Director-General La Camera said, "Korea has been a model partner country, and IRENA will strive to expand global renewable energy through cooperation with Korea." In response, Director Jeong stated, "To fulfill the COP28 pledge to triple global renewable energy, it is essential to consider the deployment trends by renewable energy source and the conditions by region and country," and requested, "IRENA should act as a bridge between developed and developing member countries."

During the assembly, the Korean delegation plans to exchange views with major partner countries such as the United States and Japan through bilateral meetings on the importance of renewable energy deployment targets that consider individual countries' deployment conditions, as well as cooperation methods between the two countries on next-generation technologies like tandem cells and policy coordination.

Additionally, taking this assembly as an opportunity, the Korean delegation plans to meet with Osman Al Ali, representative of the UAE Water and Electricity Authority, the client of the 'Azban 1.5GW Solar Power Project' recently contracted by Korea Western Power, and hold an 'Energy Companies Meeting for UAE Market Entry' at the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) Middle East Regional Headquarters. The delegation is scheduled to return to Korea on the 19th (local time).
