Mokpo Coast Guard Conducts Emergency Rescue and Oil Transfer Training Concurrently with Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation

Preventing Marine Pollution Accidents by Removing Residual Oil from Long-Term Moored Vessels

Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kwon Oh-seong) announced on the 12th that, together with the Mokpo branch of the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation, they collected approximately 10 tons of bilge water (oil mixture) loaded on the long-berth fishing vessel A (20-ton class) at Dongmyeong Port in Mokpo City through a joint oil transfer training exercise.

The long-berth fishing vessel A was in a state where the ship documents and engine had been removed, and a large amount of bilge water was stored in the engine room, raising concerns about a marine pollution accident.

The Mokpo Maritime Police and the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation formed an emergency salvage joint response team and safely removed the bilge water loaded on the vessel by deploying a pollution control boat, oil transfer equipment, and a tanker truck.

The Maritime Police will continue to conduct safety management on vessel A in cooperation with the Mokpo Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office and plan to dismantle the vessel after confirming the owner.

Meanwhile, this training was conducted to strengthen teamwork between the Maritime Police and the Management Corporation and to enhance pollution control response capabilities. It is analyzed as part of proactive administration for rapid initial response in case of future marine pollution incidents.

A representative of the Mokpo Maritime Police Station stated, “We were able to prevent marine pollution in advance by removing residual oil from the long-berth vessel,” and added, “We will continue to actively identify and address risk factors to make every effort to prevent accidents.”
