The Hwaseong National Geopark geological sites include eight locations: ▲ Gojung-ri Dinosaur Egg Fossil Site ▲ Ueumdo ▲ Jeongok Port Stratified Tuff ▲ Jebudo ▲ Baekmiri Coast ▲ Gungpyeong Port ▲ Gukhwado ▲ Ippado. The certification of the National Geopark by the Ministry of Environment is the 16th nationwide and the first for a single local government in Gyeonggi Province.
The National Geopark is an alternative park system certified by the Minister of Environment to conserve geologically significant geological heritage and utilize it for education and tourism projects, thereby promoting sustainable economic development in the region.
Taking this National Geopark certification as an opportunity, the city plans to implement various projects such as ▲ improving convenience for exploring geological sites ▲ developing new educational tourism programs ▲ discovering resident cooperation projects.
In particular, the city aims to complete within this year a 526-meter-long marine observation path encompassing Jeongok Port Stratified Tuff, the representative geological site of Hwaseong National Geopark, which has been under development since last year, to enhance its use for tourism and education.
Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun of Hwaseong said, "We will not stop at the National Geopark certification but will continue to pay attention and effort to preserve the outstanding geological heritage Hwaseong City possesses and utilize it as a tourism resource."
